CAMPBELL, John Brown III “Jack”
72, of Peggy’s Cove passed away Monday October 20, 2008 in the QEII Health Sciences Center, Halifax, with his family by his side. Born in Windsor he was the son of the late John Brown and Marjorie (Curry) Campbell.
Jack started his working career in his grandfather’s store J.B. Campbell & Son’s in Windsor, N.S. He worked a number of years for Dominion Atlantic Railway as a Station Agent, then for Metropolitan Life where he accumulated many sales awards. Always an entrepreneur at heart, in 1966 Jack toured all of Nova Scotia searching for the perfect location for his next business venture. His travels led him to Peggy’s Cove and an instant connection was made, not only with the community itself, but also with its colourful residents. He purchased the Lightview Tearoom which he then built into the present day Sou’Wester Restaurant. Jack’s connection to Peggy’s Cove lasted his entire life, and he was never at a loss for words when extolling the virtues of his beautiful village. His next business venture was the purchase of Beachcomber Enterprises in 1977, and the establishment of the Whale’s Back Country Store in 1989. He was a founding member of the South Shore Tourism Industry, a Board member of the Halifax Infirmary and Post master in Peggy’s Cove for 38 years. Jack had a lifelong passion for politics which he initially indulged by serving as a municipal councillor in Windsor, and later as an active member of the Liberal Association.
To his family Jack was an icon among men, a larger than life figure who we both admired and adored. In return he inspired us to better things, to believe in ourselves, and taught us to love unconditionally. He instilled in us the importance of family, and his goal was always to keep us close in his heart if not in location. To others Jack was generous to a fault, a prankster always ready for a laugh or a colourful story. His sense of humor was legendary, as were his antics. He was a very genial host, and his door was open to everyone. For all of his accomplishments and successes, it was always the simple things in life that gave Jack his greatest pleasure, the closeness of family and the company of good friends.
He is survived by his wife Judy Dauphinee; son, John (Juanita), Peggy’s Cove; daughter, Heather (Patrick) Coolen, Greenwood; grandchildren, Nicole and Nicholas; brothers, Gary, Dartmouth; Robert (Susan), Windsor; sisters, Beverley Oulton, Halifax; Janice (Terry) Woollam, St. Margaret’s Bay; aunt, Lillian MacMillan, Halifax; many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by daughter Elizabeth.
With heartfelt appreciation the family would like to thank the doctors and nurses of 8.2 of the QE II Health Sciences Centre for their caring and compassion.
A time of celebration and reflection of Jack’s life will be held 11 am Wednesday October 29, 2008 with a reception to follow at the Sou’Wester Restaurant, Peggy’s Cove.
